Over 400 driving experiences!
Love it or hate it, driving means much more to us than the simple convenience of getting around. A growing market for 'gift experiences' thrives on the fact that people consider the driving experience extremely thrilling.
Take this single seater experience for example, can you imagine yourself going as fast as you can around Silverstone circuit in a race car like in the video below. Whether it's having a drive in a supercar, a rally car, a 4x4 off-road vehicle or even taking a rally car around a rally stage, the act of driving itself is exhilarating to many people.
Driving experiences means different things to different people, but to many of us, it means freedom - the ability to jump in a car at any time of the day and head off in whatever direction you want. Perhaps this is why we romanticise it, and perhaps this is also why driving experiences have become such a popular choice of gift.
Instead of buying someone a possession, a thing that they can hold and keep, the idea of giving them an experience is one that seems to have increasing appeal.
A whole range of these driving experiences are now on offer. You can take a Ferrari, an Aston Martin or a Lamborghini on a time trial round a famous motor racing circuit such as Silverstone, Goodwood or Brands Hatch (and more). You can skid around off-road in a 4x4 or rally car or race friends on a quad bike. You choose the vehicle, choose the location, and off you go. You can even drive a tank if you like!
Driving experiences in the most desirable supercars in the world!
Put simply, they make us feel great. For some it's the joy of marvelling at a feat of engineering - the love affair between man and machine, 'boys and their toys' in other words. The age-old human desire to master nature through invention and technology is perfectly realised in the car.
But on a more immediate level, the appeal of driving comes from the sheer excitement of it, the fun that comes partly from a feeling of danger - the same pleasure that's offered by a funfair ride: the need for speed!
Getting behind the wheel of a car can also be like slipping on an alternative personality, and we find it liberating for that reason - playing at being someone else.
The very idea of driving is something that fascinates us from childhood onwards, and seems to appeal to us at such a basic level that the value we place on the experience of driving will probably only continue to grow.
What is a driving experience?
A racetrack-based driving experience aka the trackday experience will typically involve the following:
- You arrive at the track and are instructed on driving technique, and reminded to have fun!
- You carry out a series of laps, sometimes timed, usually with a break for lunch.
- You are presented with a certificate recording your experience, including framed photo and in car video footage of your driving experience in some cases!
And the people who receive these gifts can't seem to recommend them enough, with many making repeated visits! The fact that skill is involved makes drivers want to return in the hope that they'll beat their previous track day lap times.
Driving experiences have a much bigger impact on people than the traditional types of gift (the ones you can wrap up) - how can you even try to put a value on an experience?
